An expertly crafted journey through Tanzania's four most iconic wilderness areas — from elephant-studded baobab plains to the world's greatest wildlife spectacle, culminating in the legendary Ngorongoro Crater.
This 5-day Northern Tanzania circuit is one of the most complete safari experiences available anywhere in Africa. Beginning in the vast Tarangire National Park — famous for its enormous elephant herds and ancient baobab trees — you'll progress through the bird-rich alkaline shores of Lake Manyara, across the endless Serengeti plains, and finally descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Best season: Year-round. The Great Migration peaks June–October in the Serengeti's northern reaches; December–March offers calving season in the south.
Your adventure begins with an early morning hotel pickup in Arusha. After a scenic drive southwest through the Maasai steppe, you'll enter Tarangire National Park — home to Tanzania's largest elephant population and iconic baobab-studded landscapes. An afternoon game drive reveals herds of up to 300 elephants alongside wildebeest, zebra, and an extraordinary array of birdlife.
A morning game drive in Lake Manyara National Park rewards with the park's famed tree-climbing lions resting in acacia branches, and the spectacular sight of thousands of flamingos adorning the alkaline lakeshore. After lunch, you'll make the long but spectacular drive to the central Serengeti, arriving in time for a golden-hour game drive.
A full day devoted entirely to the Serengeti — the greatest wildlife theatre on Earth. With over 1.5 million wildebeest and 500,000 zebra migrating across its endless plains, every game drive here is unique. Today you'll explore the vast Seronera Valley and its environs in both morning and afternoon sessions, with a bush picnic at midday.
Balloon Safari: For an unforgettable sunrise experience, a hot air balloon flight over the Serengeti can be arranged as an optional add-on (approx. USD 500 per person). Book in advance.
After a final morning game drive in the Serengeti, you'll make your way east across the plains and up into the cool Ngorongoro highlands. The drive up to the crater rim is spectacular — dense Afro-montane forest, Maasai villages, and sweeping views back across the Serengeti. You'll spend the evening at a rim lodge, dining as the sun sets over the crater 600 metres below.
The grand finale — a full morning descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. The crater floor (260 km²) supports one of the densest concentrations of wildlife on the planet, including the rare black rhino. After a picnic lunch inside the crater, you'll ascend the rim and make the scenic drive back to Arusha, arriving by early evening.
The Crater: Only 4×4 vehicles with pop-up roofs are permitted inside the crater. No walking outside your vehicle except at designated picnic areas. Crater fees are included in the package.
Perched on a rocky ridge above the Tarangire River, this classic bush lodge offers panoramic views of elephant-dotted plains. Maramboi is an alternative offering East African-style canvas tents in a breathtaking location near alkaline lakes.
Set amid kopje granite outcrops at the heart of the Serengeti, Sopa Lodge blends into the landscape beautifully. Seronera Wildlife Lodge sits directly on a kopje and offers spectacular sunrise viewing from the rock platform.
Perched on the crater rim with uninterrupted views across the caldera, Sopa Lodge is dramatic and luxurious. For the ultimate experience, Crater Lodge is one of Africa's most celebrated lodges — a truly unforgettable final night.
Tipping guide: USD 15–20/day for your safari guide; USD 5–10/day for camp staff is standard and greatly appreciated.
